giving back, in the whack of the tragedy at sandy hook elementary school. >> an international manhunt is over. the man wanted for attacking women at shopping malls is now back in fairfax county after running away to south camerica. >> trouble for a maryland woman trying to donate toys to needy children. first they were stolen. now after a second shopping trip there is a road block. >> it has been four days since that awful tragedy at sandy hook elementary school. emotions quite understandly are still raw. >> some students returned to class for the first time since the rampage. others were laid to rest. jay gray has the the latest from newtown, connecticut. >> reporter: it had been only four days. >> wait a day, a month, whatever, you know -- there is no -- there is no rule book. >> reporter: no real way for others to understand. the raw emotions of students and parents as schools reopen today in newtown. >> there is no word.

just tears. >> reporter: so tough for many parents to let go. but time they say for the kids to get back. >> they need be there as soon as possible. be with their friend, with the teachers. the kids are what the teachers need right now. >> reporter: sandy hook elementary school is closed. furniture and equipment from the school moved to a facility in monroe. it is not clear when students might get there, when they do, officials say the classrooms will look just like they did before the attacks, still, everyone here knows, they will never really be the same. 20 friend, teammates. brothers and sisters will be missing. two more first graders were buried today. he liked math and loved to sing as loud as he could. jessica, spent time drawing hor horses. tomorrow, 27-year-old victoria soto will be laid to rest. >> whatever actions they took to divert his attention, i am sure

adults who died. >> i imagine my actions the same as all the teachers. >> reporter: you would put yourself in front of the kids? >> yeah, it's my job. they're my kids. >> reporter: as a substitute teacher she has not been trained in whether or how to handle confronting an armed assailant at school other than of course taking actions to protect the students. she says, some self-defense training wouldn't be a bad idea. live in the newsroom, jim rosen rosenrosen rosenfield. potentially dangerous situation was averted, a stew accident made threats to possibly shoot and kill others at the school. officers wear lettered after students reported the threats. investigators found suspicious list and diagrams in the student's locker and belief he had access to weapons. prince george's county schools will send out a letter to parents tomorrow. the student was not in school yesterday. but he was taken into custody and put into a psychiatric

hospital. breaking news about at take on the u.s. consulate in benghazi. a report from an independent panel find systematic failures at the state department. shomari stone is outside the state department with the response from secretary hill terhillary clinton. shomari stone? >> reporter: the report was released an gives 30 recommendations how the u.s. government can improve security overseas. secretary of state hillary clinton plans to accept all the recommendations. now, the panel took a long look at the september 11th attack in libya. and it endped wied with the dea ambassador chris stevens. according to accountability review board, security in benghazi was grossly inadequate to deal with at take that took place. in addition the review board confirmed there was no protest prior to the attack. and terrorists were responsible for what happened. the report also says the u.s. waited too long to make security adjustments in benghazi, despite

is receiving an honor, his body will lie in state inside the capitol rotunda, something often reserved for presidents. the senator died yesterday of respiratory complications and he was 88. he was hawaii's senator for half a century and second longest serving member of the senate. the senator was also a world war ii hero, resip ynt cipient of t of honor. >> suspected serial slasher is back in the county. accused of attacking nine women at shopping malls in our areas by cutting them from behind. he was extradited to the united states today after beg arrested in january in native peru. police say surveillance video and photos caught him in stores at the times of the attacks. the women were cut while shopping in spots like fairoaks mall and fairfax town center last year. they were not seriously hurt.

to honor the victims at sandy hook elementary school. it quickly went viral. erica gonzalez is in d.c. to show us how local people are giving back to others to hope cope with the unspeakable tragedy. >> reporter: doreen, whether to twitter or the united states postal service. newt nu newtown is warming people's hearts. son yeas contributing to a fund for children with aids in malwali. newtown is kindling kindness in her and millions more. >> when i first heard of the tragedy it gave me a really heavy heart. i think this is a we to show people that -- the world is not all evil. >> it first began with nbc's ann curry posing the question on twitter -- what if we all did something nice. 20 nice somethings to honor the children or 26 acts of kindness to include the teachers lost.

the hash tag began trending and people are responding. this d.c. resident tweeted. her 3-year-old donated two toys for tots. or this person, who paid for some one else's breakfast. at your nearest post office, there is a way for you to send condolences, directly to newtown. >> i thought a great idea. >> this po box now offers a way for the world to comfort the grief stricken town. >> i think it is fantastic to give people -- a way to focus their, sympathy for everyone up there. >> reporter: now there are two big questions, to go along with that po box number. can i send more than just a card? a letter, maybe a care package? absolutely you can. number two, who do i address tight. want to send it to first responders, to teachers, to sandy hook elementary school in general, write that on the top line. leave it to the postal service to get it to the right people.

another big item for the marching band. ballou marching band. the majestic marching knights they're called. bring their powerful sound to the inaugural parade for president obama. in 2009, the band performed in front of millions at macy's thanksgiving day parade in new york. the inaugural committee received 3,000 applications. the university of maryland marching band also will be part of the event. good for them. >> the kids from ballou are amazing. >> they are. that's our broadcast.
